There is no question that under the Old Testament musical instruments were authorized in worship to God. David played various instruments (2 Samuel 6:5) and later kings followed the same example in accordance with the Lord’s commandment (2 Chronicles 29:25). It is also clear that God was not always pleased with the manner in which this was carried out (Amos 5:23; 6:5). When Jesus establishes the New Covenant He sends the Apostles the Holy Spirit to guide them “into all truth” (John 16:13). These Apostles are described as the “foundation” of the “household of God” with “Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone” (Ephesians 2:19,20). These Apostles taught us “how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15). Their teaching and approved examples became the binding standard for the church (Philippians 4:9). As a result, when we look at the teaching of the Apostles we find twice the command to sing in worship to God (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:19) but no instruction or example of New Testament Christians using instruments of music in worship to God. The only references to musical instruments in the New Testament describe conditions in heaven (Revelation 5:8; 14:2; 15:2). In keeping with our aim to follow the God’s word as our sole guide we strive to do what God has commanded without adding to it or taking away from it.
