Songs of Encouragement
Introduction.
Colossians
3:16 teaches that we are to teach one another in song. Singing in worship is
not about entertainment (although we would hope that Christians enjoy praising
God). It is something by which we educate and encourage one another through the
struggles of life. Tonight we are going to do this as we focus on some songs
and themes of encouragement.
I.
The Grandeur of Christ.
A. Jesus
is God (Isa. 9:6; Col. 1:15).
B. He
offered Himself for mankind (Phil. 2:5-8; Rev. 5:9-10).
• A
Wonderful Savior no. 363.
• Hallelujah!
What a Savior no. 161.
II.
The Encouragement of His Atonement.
A. Although
sinners, Christ died for us (Rom. 3:10-12; 5:6).
• He
Bore it All no. 666.
III.
The Encouragement of Victory and Deliverance.
A. Christ
overcomes the world (John 16:33). The Gr. here is nenikeka in a form
called the “perfect” which indicates something that is in a state of having
attained a present condition. Lit. “I am in a state of having overcome.” He
had not yet died when he said that, but his crucifixion was ordained from the
foundation of the world.
B. In
Christ we can overcome trial, temptation, persecution, and death (Rom. 8:37-39;
1 John 5:4).
• Faith
is the Victory no. 576.
• He
is Able to Deliver Thee no. 279.
IV.
The Nearness of His Coming.
A. In
Spite of Mockers Christ will Return (2 Pet. 3:1-4, 10).
B. Jesus
is coming quickly (Rev. 22:12-14).
• It
Won’t Be Very Long no. 380.
